Through The Colours: What Red Really Means This Pride

Malta Pride this September is a time for the island to don every shade of the rainbow. And as time leads up to the grand parade in Valletta, I’m taking the time to reflect through the colours of the pride flag. Not as a historian, not as a spokesperson, not as anything official. Just as me: queer, apparently autistic (spoilers…), trying to live a little louder after the quiet of COVID crept in too comfortably. So, let’s start with red... Like the pulse in your wrists reminding you that you’re still here. Or a flush in your cheeks when you’re caught in a moment that feels almost cinematic. Red can be the nosebleed you didn’t see coming after one too many espresso shots. Red is life because red doesn’t let you forget you’re in it.So red – red is a reboot. Red is me deciding that if this is all just a game, I may as well claim my place at the table. Roll the dice, draw my card, take the risk. Even if I lose. Especially if I lose. Because if you can’t reset, you’re only option is continue.Red is every life choice we can look back on and laugh at, every risk that never paid off but still taught its lesson, every time that one personn made you blush and realise you are, in fact, very much alive. So red is life. Red is a pulse. Red is blood, sweat and tears.

It is a primary color in the RGB color model and a secondary color (made from magenta and yellow) in the CMYK color model, and is the complementary color of cyan.Since red is the color of blood, it has historically been associated with sacrifice, danger, and courage. Modern surveys in Europe and the United States show red is also the color most commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love, and joy.In China, India, and many other Asian countries it is the color symbolizing happiness and good fortune. Varieties of the color red may differ in hue, chroma (also called saturation, intensity, or colorfulness), or lightness (or value, tone, or brightness), or in two or three of these qualities. The human eye sees red when it looks at light with a wavelength between approximately 625 and 740 nanometers. It is a primary color in the RGB color model and the light just past this range is called infrared, or below red, and cannot be seen by human eyes, although it can be sensed as heat.In the language of optics, red is the color evoked by light that stimulates neither the S or the M (short and medium wavelength) cone cells of the retina, combined with a fading stimulation of the L (long-wavelength) cone cells.

Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff both showed up to recent matches in the fiery hue with matching sneakers by Nike and New Balance. It appears that red is the color of the moment at this year’s U.S. Open over in Flushing Meadows. The games have a way of bringing out stylish New Yorkers. They also allot for a moment to hyper-focus on bubbling trends like this one. Who exactly was spotted in red so far?Since red is a hue often associated with luck and abundance, it comes as no surprise that it’s trending at the U.S. Open. But the way that Gauff and Osaka opted to wear this color is what sticks out to me. Their looks pivot a bit into experimental territory like Venus Williams’ Luar moment earlier this week.Next up, Coco Gauff also wore a special New Balance kit, which featured red pieces. Revealed in a campaign creatively directed by Joe FreshGoods, Gauff’s kit is designed with preppy inclinations: it includes a red cropped top with the New Balance logo and a white tennis skirt designed with her name at the back.Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka made a deliberate choice for a glitzy jacket that featured an assortment of red crystals. Osaka also donned sparkling red roses in her hair. The player wore matching red headphones, a red bedazzled Labubu, and a sporty red dress by Nike.

Is Red Meat Bad for You? The Proof Is in the Processing

The WHO has declared red meat a carcinogen. So, Dr Christopher Labos asks the question we're all thinking: Is a hot dog really as bad as a cigarette? But on the other hand, the WHO (World Health Organization) has declared red meat a carcinogen, with a hot dog being as bad as cigarette. Yes, that was headline when the report came out. So, how do we reconcile these opposing ideas? Part of the solution is realizing the WHO organization in question is based in France. If you don’t speak French, don’t worry I got you covered. Ce n'est pas si difficile de tout n'inquiétez vous pas. Vous allez voir. Sit back, grab a baguette, and let’s find out how dangerous red meat really is.He is my son, and I would throw myself in front of a moving car for him. By necessity, when we do medical research on meat, we are lumping together a whole lot of a different human behavior, with people eating different types of animals based on where they live. There’s no real alternative, and frankly, you can’t let the perfect become the enemy of the good. Most credible research will at least separate out red meat from white meat. They were basically trying to position pork as an alternative to chicken. People also usually think veal or deer is white meat. They think the difference between white and red meat has something to do the age of the animal, whether its free range, or the color of the meat.

Your red is my red, at least to our brains

Despite philosophical debates, colors like red may spark similar brain activity across individuals, new research suggests. It’s a late-night debate in college dorms across the world: Is my red the same as your red? Two neuroscientists weigh in on this classic “Intro to Philosophy” puzzler in research published September 8 in the Journal of Neuroscience.Or it could be that seeing red kicks off a standard, predictable pattern of brain activity that doesn’t vary much from person to person. The answer is overwhelmingly the second option, the new study suggests. “There are commonalities across brains,” Bartels says. But these neuroanatomical findings can’t answer the question of how it feels to see red, Bartels says. How brain activity creates subjective inner experiences is a much bigger and thornier question about consciousness, one that will no doubt continue to be debated for a long time. There were two possibilities when it comes to how brains perceive color, says Andreas Bartels of the University of Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Germany. Perhaps everyone’s brain is unique, with bespoke snowflake patterns of nerve cells responding when a person sees red.

r/Aphantasia on Reddit: Now I'm curious, when people say they see red do they really see it?

I would say that’s usually a figure of speech, as red is a color associated with anger. But there are some people who see color associated with the emotions that they feel, so for those folks it may actually be true that they’re experiencing a color along with their emotion. I've seen red - in an extreme anger situation. It was in my eyes/eyelids rather than my imagination. Couldn't see a thing. I thought this was the saying meant. Having a quick look right now...I'm not sure it is!Figure of speech. Guys named Kyle at buffalo wild wings wearing tap out t-shirts with monster stickers on their lifted trucks see red when they get in "street fights". "If we got in a fight bro I would desimate you all I see is red when I get mad"-kyleOf course, it is also used as a figure of speech. But it's roots are in the physical phenomenon. ... That's a figure of speech. 😂😅 ... Could be their visualisation as they associate red with anger then they visualize it when they're angry. You're talking about synesthesia. r/NoStupidQuestions on Reddit: Is there any way to prove that the color red I see is the same color red everyone else sees?

This is the one. Color blindness tests emit (reflect) light at very specific wavelengths. And they are a great way to quickly test if one person can’t see a color that another can. This proves that you can (or can not) see the color red (just the same as everyone else. Yeah, one of my eyes perceives more of a green hue, and the other more red. It’s like adding a filter over a camera or wearing slightly (differently) colored lenses. The only way I can tell is if I close one eye at a time and compareMy left eye sees thing with a subtle tint of blue, and right with tint of red, i can notice this only when i open one eye at the time and look at same thing. Like if you mooved red/blue slider on a photo by 4%, like a fraction of what warm/cold filter does, had this since i remember. I don't know which eye is correct. This is what we call "Qualia". Which is the name for a sense that we cannot truly confirm that others experience the same way you do. You and your friend both will call Red Red, but there is no way to ever confirm if their Red is the same as your Red.This means that people will argue with you a lot, but the reason we theorize that everyone sees similar colors is because we all have similar cones in our eyes that allow us to process those colors. Everyone is a little different, so unless you’re colorblind your red is very similar to someone else’s, but is it the same?
